Snappy title, eh? If you are a longtime reader, you know that this is the least I have written on my blog EVER in the eight years I’ve been blogging. If you get my email newsletter, you know that I’ve had car wrecks, computer crashes, computer viruses, and sick kids. Happy summer, right?! I’ll pepper this post with totally unrelated photos of how my time has been occupied lately.
The totally weird part is that this is the highest number of page views I have EVER had. That’s weird, right? I’m going to talk about WHY and also talk about what the heck I mean by giving my blog a butt lift. If you want to skip my personal story and get to the actionable items for you and your blog, I totally get it. Click to find 5 Easy Ways to Update Your Blog Backlist.
Here is the thing about blogs: they grow with you. The case in point is my very first blog. Have you read it? Did you know that THIS was not my first blog? (Check out my first blog, I Still Hate Pickles.) When I first started blogging, it was in order to talk about pregnancy, home birth, and then chronicle the wild –moments of my growing family. For years, I loved my little space on the internet. But then I grew and so did my blog.
I realized this was a WRITING space. I do call myself a writer, after all, but blogging didn’t seem like the same kind of writing, so it took a long time for me to recognize blogging for the amazing space for words that it is. Now I have this personal blog, my blog for writers and creatives, and a podcast. (I don’t sleep much, in case you weren’t sure.) I love that I can write through my changing life and let the blog adapt with me and my life. My life right now is this: four kids during summer and a husband whose busiest work time is right NOW. I can hardly find time to breathe, much less blog.
Though I’m not breathing or blogging much, I am working on a ton of other projects. I’m still keeping up with the Create If Writing podcast and have some great interviews coming up (looking at you, Ed Cyzewski). I also am podcasting for the Blogger 2 Business podcast with other AMAZING guests. I can’t tell you how much I love talking to people! I also have some other writing projects going on that I can’t talk about yet, but if you want to know first, you should probably sign up for my email list.
Where does the butt lift come in?
This summer while I am doing the podcasting and writing of new things, I’m also spending some time on what I’d like to call my blog backlist. Otherwise known as my old posts. I am tweaking images and making things better and working to arrange things like pages and categories on my blog so that things are more organized and more user friendly. It is the kind of work I often put off because it isn’t as exciting as the newest post or project. But I feel like spending that time there, especially this summer when I have so little time, is a huge value to the blog and to YOU, the readers.
