Every one of my kids has been different in almost every way. I find myself throwing out the playbook with each new kid. I find maybe a little overlap, but often I try what worked before, try something a friend recommends, try what a book recommends, try the internet, and then maybe try a glass of wine. (For me, not the kids.) When it comes to sensitive skin after diaper changes, the boys really didn’t have any issues. We cloth diapered more with the two of them and they didn’t seem to have very sensitive skin. The girls? A different story. Both of them are more prone to redness and irritation.
And after trying several brand-name diaper creams, I have found that the simplest and best diaper cream has two ingredients and is so simple to make that my not-quite-two-year-old can help.
Two-Ingredient Diaper Cream
Coconut Oil
Young Living Lavender Essential Oil
Spoon a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of coconut oil into a glass container (we used a tiny mason jar). If the coconut oil is stiff or hard, you may want to microwave it for 10 seconds at a time until it’s not liquid, but soft enough to stir with a spoon. Add 5 or so drops of Lavender Essential Oil and stir to combine. The end.

Let me say that we have had some NASTY stuff. Cooper recently had some kind of insanely sensitive skin that she clawed with her fingers and it was bad news. I tried several store-bought things, but none of them seemed to do the trick. They also left build-up or residue that got on her clothes and other places in her skin. For Quin (who has the most MASSIVE rolls ever), these creams kept moisture in her roll-y legs up high on her thighs and kept her skin from healing.
This homemade diaper cream? Works well and quickly. Does not leave residue and dries quickly. Smells great. Lavender is very soothing (read more about how and why I use essential oils) and you KNOW that coconut oil is like magic. (See my GIANT list of coconut oil uses if you haven’t already.)
When I sat down to make this, Cooper pulled up a chair and insisted on helping me. She is VERY into helping. And the whole reason I was out of cream is because she keeps getting into it and rubbing it on her body and rubbing it on her dolls and stuffed animals when they have “dirty diapers.”
