I can still remember that summer afternoon. We had just completed the Bossy Summer Games, a sort of tournament of physical fitness put on by my roller derby team, the Bayou City Bosses. Races had been run, sit-ups had been sat-up, and baby dolls had been tossed. (We might throw in a few fun events.) I just wanted to get out of the sweltering heat and use the bathroom. But as soon as I got home, I had that tell-tale feeling and realized: I HAD A BLADDER INFECTION. Of course it was a Saturday, and I found myself in dire and immediate need of help. My doctor’s office was closed and the ER is too expensive. Enter the Healthcare Clinic Houston at Walgreens.
Within an hour I had seen a health care professional and received a prescription and recommendations to clear out this UTI pronto. With three kids, I simply can’t spend all day in the bathroom with my kids crawling all over me or pounding on the door. Thanks to the Walgreens Healthcare Clinic Houston, I was in, out, and back on the mend within hours. Moms who have dealt with UTIs (or really any other illness), you know how valuable that is.In my second season as a roller derby coach, my team’s health is of huge importance. We can’t win a bout with half the girls sick with flu or stuck in the bathroom with a UTI like me. But derby is also a great place for sickness to thrive: think of 100 girls skating in close proximity, touching, and sharing the same space for 6 or more hours each week. Think of the gear: sweat-soaked knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, and even a mouth guard. We are a breeding ground for colds, flus, and even staph infections.
Most girls are becoming pros at prevention. We urge girls not to attend practice if they are sick and to wrap up blisters and cuts with clean, fresh bandages so they aren’t as exposed to the potential staph bacteria living in our pads. (Yuck.) Not only does Walgreens carry everything we need to stock our derby bags from bandages to zinc, they can also treat sprains, strains, migraines, skin infections, and even mild back pain. (And, of course, UTIs.)
They accept insurance, but you don’t have to have insurance to see someone at Healthcare Clinic Houston or any of the other locations throughout the US. And speaking of convenience, you can check wait times and make appointments online. I’m not sure how it could be more convenient!
When it comes to keeping my derby team healthy and on the track, I trust the girls to start with great prevention first. But when that fails (and it will eventually fail), visiting a Healthcare Clinic Houston is a great option for busy women needing something convenient and affordable. Who doesn’t need to save on time and healthcare costs?? Whether you are a derby girl or not, the Healthcare Clinic is a great choice for your health-related needs.
