I have been wanting a backyard garden for a long time. I think I’ve sufficiently overcome my black thumb to warrant a real garden, but we have a bigger obstacle: our pool. With a pool and full-size trampoline, our backyard is chock full. The solution? A kitchen garden.
While I hope my kitchen garden will transform into a back patio garden, for now, I love watching the greens grow. And honestly? They’ve grown so quickly that it’s almost as though I have watched them.
Here is my romaine a week ago.And NOW!
While things do look a little messier on the counter, I will soon transplant the romaine outside, and the green onion is ready to cook with! I’m not sure if the roots will grow another set, but I’ll let you know. See how tiny they were a week ago?
Supposedly these will keep producing, but we’ll see. I still plan to try garlic, ginger, and cabbage if not more. Here is a great resource for growing from table scraps!
The basic method: save the root end you normally toss out. Place in water midway up the stalk. Keep in moderate sun and change the water as it gets murky. For plants like romaine, transplant outdoors.
I’ll be sure to update as I move my garden from the counter to the patio, but for now, I love watching my kitchen garden grow! Do you have a black or green thumb? What have you had success growing? (It’s okay if it was just a chia pet…)
